Movie Review: Modify

Posted by Donald on Aug 25, 2009 in Movies

An overview of the question of body modification in all it’s aspects, from simple tattooing to cauterising branding, body building to plastic surgery, piercing to full body suspension using large hooks.  Some aspects of this documentary are definitely not for children or the squeamish (or me), it includes video of plastic surgeries, branding, body-piercing, guys putting things in their penises, a person getting a tongue split, etc.

If you can handle all that, the interviews with various people examining the nuances behind body modification are interesting.  It is approached from several different view points and comes across mostly well thought out.  At several points in the film though they degraded to trying to appealing to the salacious appetite of the viewer, with repeated showings of women in various strip shows.  I think to show off their piercing(s)/cuts, but it just came across as a way to show T&A.

I can’t say I liked it or would recommend it to anyone else.  I didn’t hate it though either.  I rate it zero stars out of five for ‘ambivalent’.

Surreal

Posted by Donald on Oct 1, 2007 in 00News and Notes, Movies

This weekend has been kinda surreal. Friday night I stayed up way late playing WoW (alterac valley honor weekend.) Got up early Saturday morning and watched the War series by Ken Burns. We had watched the first episode already but skipped the others until Sat Morning. Watching three in a row was something else. I tried to play more Wow but was too tired and went to sleep for a while. I got up and Helen and I had a nice candle-lit dinner outside where we cooked skewers over our little fire-pit. It was a very nice night and we both had a great time.

Sunday we had breakfast with Eve and saw the movie “Resident Evil: Extinction” It was decent, not great but decent. If you liked the first one, this one is better. More zombies and a lot more ass kicking. I liked the new white queen, I want my computer to do that.
Hint the computer is the little girl in the white dress.

I spent most of the afternoon working or trying to work. It was difficult to stay focused.

I woke up this morning having a bad dream. I dreamt that I was getting a tattoo of some dolphins playing in the surf under the setting sun. The problem was the guy giving me the tattoo was using an old razor blade dipped in ink to do it and his girl friend was helping and she just had a hunk of metal dipped ink that she was scraping my skin with. It was disturbing, so I’m up early on a rainy Monday morning thinking of the week ahead, (Helen has her surgery) and the work I need to do and feeling a slight twinging in my shoulder.

34 and counting….

Posted by Donald on Jul 17, 2007 in 00News and Notes

Turned 34 on Saturday! Yay! Woot! Yippee!

Went to see the Harry Potter movie, verdict: it was ok, but not great.

Spent the rest of the day relaxing with Pooks. Since she had been out of town for the week we used most of the day to just be together and enjoy each others company. It was a nice long relaxing weekend.

Several friends of mine are doing ’self-improvement’ type things. preparing for job changes, working on their education, things like that. I have wondered if I should be doing those things too, but I really like what I do, maybe not where I’m doing it, but I love the what part. If anything, going back to school for a masters would be worthwhile, but I look at the time and money it would take and I have my doubts about it. I know it’s a good investment, but with other things to worry about…

on a good note, I’ve paid off my van woohoo!
